Peas, Pudding and Saveloys

Hate musicals – especially film musicals? Or maybe you think Tim Burton’s film of Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd was something special? If you fall into either category, then this video won’t be for you. It’s a clip from Carol Reed’s 1968 film Oliver!

The film was adapted from Lionel Bart’s 1960 musical based on Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist. It has great performances by Shani Wallis, Oliver Reed, Jack Wild and Ron Moody. This scene features an appearance by the late Harry Secombe as Bumble the Beadle.

One of the film’s biggest set pieces was the song Consider Yourself – (which an enterprising ‘net surfer could no doubt locate). If you’ve never seen it, you may still be familiar with some of that scene’s visual motifs from seeing it’s parody, the Every Sperm is Sacred sequence from Monty Python’s feature film The Meaning of Life (1983).
