Swift Retribution

I’m prepared to accept that I’m a bit of an ironic type who occasionally drifts into full on cynicism. I can be somewhat of a smartarse at times. (Yes, this, I confess). However I was unprepared for the shock to my system of actually listening to the lyrics of Taylor Swift’s Today Was A Fairytale, the mega-selling single that was released earlier this year to coincide with the movie Valentine’s Day.

I had ignored the song for a couple of months and I was unprepared for the utter wretchedness of the lyrics. I find the words trite and idiotic; I feel we need to dispatch an old priest and a young priest to exorcise their demonic naffness from the very zeitgeist of this planet.

I expressed this to some of my circle and they suggested that my poseur’s default negativity had blinded me to the beauty and the magic of this song. And that in fact if one were young and in love, then Miss Swift’s lyrics would perfectly express that blissful state.

Hence, I propose another poll.

Is the song Today Was A Fairytale a touchingly beautiful tribute to the blessed state of being in romantic love? Or is it a nauseating piece of trite, bubblegum propaganda that should never be broadcast again?  And for those of you who haven’t heard this shimmering love song recently, below there are as many of the lyrics as I could stand to have in my ‘blog.

So Jukebox Jury –  Today Was A Fairy Tale – Trash or Smash? Hit or Miss? Spin it or bin it?

Please vote in the poll on the right hand side of this blog.

It will run until midnight Thursday 23rd/Friday 24th April.

Cheers,

Mr Trivia

Today was a fairytale
You were the prince
I used to be a damsel in distress
You took me by the hand and you picked me up at six
Today was a fairytale

Today was a fairytale
I wore a dress
You wore a dark grey t-shirt
You told me I was pretty when I looked like a mess
Today was a fairytale
Time slows down whenever you’re around

But can you feel this magic in the air?
It must have been the way you kissed me
Fell in love when I saw you standing there
It must have been the way
Today was a fairytale
It must have been the way
Today was a fairytale

(excerpted lyrics  from Today Was  Fairytale, by T, Swift.)

  1. ‘You wore a dark grey t-shirt’?

    Where’s the romance in that?

I’ve never heard this song and, based on the lyrics alone, I hope I never will.

  2. He wore a dark-grey t-shirt? I wear a dark-grey t-shirt! And my girlfriend owns a dress! More than one, I believe. I’m not sure exactly how many, but I think I’ve seen her in at least two separate dresses.

Wow… it’s like the song is written about us! I mean, it’s not, cause I know that Taylor Swift or who-ever writes Taylor Swift’s songs has never met us. At least, as far as I know they’ve not. I don’t remember any occasion lately when we’ve been out with friends and one of them has said, “Hey guys, I forgot to mention, I wrote a hit song about you kids and that dark-grey t-shirt you wore that time. Hope you don’t mind! Here, I’m a millionaire now, so let me get dinner.”

That hasn’t happened, as far as I can remember anyway.

So yeah, with this song being (almost) about me, I can see how it would appeal to other owners of dark-grey shirts.

But not me, cause it’s actually a bit shit.
